Posting #202 – HR4727 Keep Kid’s Safe Act 2010- Takes Away Your Second Amendment Right to Bear Arms!

By:  RSOL of Virginia
Date:  03/18/2010

Virginia Supporters,

There is a new bill proposed in Congress.

HR4727- Keep Kids Safe Act 2010 -   March 2, 2010
To amend title 18, United States Code, to place limitations on the possession, sale, and other disposition of a firearm by persons convicted of misdemeanor sex offenses against children.     Http://WWW.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-4727

In the U.S. a misdemeanor conviction is NOT suppose to have any bearing on being a gun owner.

Except, if it's a misdemeanor domestic violence offense from firearms possession.  It makes for one of those odd technicalities in the law.  Federal law provides that someone with a felony conviction who has his/her civil rights and firearms possession rights restored by the state or jurisdiction of conviction (or one who has civil rights restored that does not expressly prohibit firearms possession) can legally possess a firearm under federal statute.  However, the person who has a misdemeanor domestic violence offense has no recourse under federal law, even if the state does not take away or restores civil or firearms rights for misdemeanors.

The RSOL of Virginia is not pro-gun OR anti-gun but we strongly oppose this bill.

Owning a gun and having a sex offense charge against a child have no correlation. A sex offense charge against a child could include "sexting" in some states, an 18 or 19 year old boyfriend having consensual sex with his 15, 16 or 17 year old girlfriend or sexual assault which includes simply pinching someone on their rear-end.

What about those who commit sexual crimes against adults? Why wouldn't Congress take away their right to own a firearm?

Our Legislators just want to take EVERYTHING away from those who are stigmatized Sex Offender and they keep using the excuse "to protect the children" and we can not allow this pattern to continue.

Look at the title of the bill, who wouldn't vote for it?

They either need to try to take away guns from ALL citizens who have ANY type of misdemeanor conviction or just drop it!

Please contact your one Congress member from Virginia this week and ask them to oppose HR4727.
