Posting #25 – Letter to my Virginia Lawmakers, by BobBy: Bob Dear, Virginia Lawmakers, Please do not pass these laws. HB1582: http://www.richmondsunlight.com/bill/2009/hb1582/ What should be asked is how these laws impact the people on the registry and their families. What about the impact Virginia laws have on the innocent children of sex offenders? People harass them, shun them and threaten them. What consideration is taken to these thousands of innocent children? What about the spouses of sex offenders who have done nothing wrong, what impact on their lives and rights? Consider what these people face to get their lives back. If sex offenders have served their sentences what productive life can sex offenders have with all these laws? If they can’t find employment, somewhere to live, and somehow start their lives over, how are they expected to live? Do they need more legislation? What legislators should be asking is what screening is taking place to determine if someone is truly dangerous before placing them on the sex offender registry. Instead the tiers are determined by violent offense, which nearly all offenses have been changed to violent and felony. There are a number of people on the internet who have been assessed by court appointed sex offender professionals to be NO threat to society. Then why are they on the registry? These bills do not protect anyone and appear to be geared towards punishment and appeasement of public opinion. Why aren’t legislators interested in who are truly dangerous instead of changing all offenses to felonies and violent offenses? I understand there is even legislation to put 12 year olds on the sex offender registry and exclude them from education. What a waste of my tax dollars to appease the public and do nothing to really protect anyone. Please do not vote yes to these laws. Dr. Bob
