Posting #31 –Tonya’s Story
I’m 38 years old and I was thrilled to receive your letter announcing the RSOL of Virginia. I’m willing to help out anyway I can. I would like you to know that I’m registered as a “Violent” sex offender and I was devastated when it happened, I’m still feeling the affects even though it’s been almost 5 years ago. I consider myself a victim of a very unjust system. I’m a single mother of three children; in 2004 my 15 year old son had a girlfriend who was 23 years old. I knew of their relationship and I tried to discourage my son. After time went by, they became sexual active. I spoke to the girlfriend but they stayed together. Then one day when my son got into trouble and it all came down. My county came and arrested me for indecent liberties by person of supervision (allowing my son to have sex with an adult), they also arrested the girlfriend. I knew they had been together but I had never been around when it happened. I was tricked into signing a plea agreement that I thought was a great deal, but then discovered I had just been “screwed”. I was not told by my lawyer or by the court during my plea that I would be a registered “Violent Sex Offender” for the rest of my life. I’m restricted to where I can go as far as social events at school and during Halloween. I have NEVER touched a child or had ANY sexual relations with a child; it was my 15 year old son who had sex with an adult that has caused this. I’d like to get off the registry or at least get my classification reduced to “Non-Violent”; I’m glad to help in anyway. Thank you and God Bless. Tonya
