Posting #93 – Marley’s StoryBy: Marley Dear RSOL of Virginia, When the General Assembly changed the law I was re-classified to violent as of July 2008. I did not learn of this change until December 2008. So now instead of re-registering once a year I register every 3 months for life. Is this right or fair? NO! I was supposed to get off the list in 10 years, which would be this year. I called the Virginia Sex Offender Registry after I got the letter in December 2008. They said I would have had to petition the court before it became law on July 2008 to attempt to be removed in 2009 as was the original plan. I asked them, how I could have done that when I didn’t get the letter until December 2008! We get the newspaper we watch the news, we had no idea this law was passed. Has this affected me and my family? Definitely! My husband of 35 years, my child, my mother are all very upset. How can the General Assembly change what the court has already set for you? How is that possible? Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s good to know that someone does really care. Marley
