Not So Fun Facts For The U.S.:
- More than 1 in 100 Americans are currently in a prison or jail cell
- 1 in every 53 Americans in their twenties is currently in a prison or jail cell
- 1 in every 15 African American men lives in a prison or jail cell
- 1 in every 30 Hispanic American men lives in a prison or jail cell
- Before ever being judged guilty, many people being held in jail (not prison) are awaiting trial. They can not afford the bail. In 2006, 60% of those in America’s jails had not been convicted, not had a trial. They loose their jobs and their property while waiting for their right to a speedy trail (or hearing).
- The United States accounts for 5% of the world’s population – and 25% of the world’s population
- The United States now surpasses China, Russia, Iran and South Africa in the proportion of our citizens behind bars.
- The United States has 2.3 million citizens locked up on any given day, approximately the same number as Russia and China combined.
- Some countries that incarcerate prisoners for shorter terms have lower rates of crime. American prisoners are locked up twice as long as English prisoners, three times as long as Canadian prisoners, four times as long as Dutch prisoners, five-to-ten times longer than French prisoners and fives times as long as Swedish prisoners.
- In 1987 all 50 states spent a total (excluding federal expenditures) of $10.6 Billion on corrections In 2007 all 50 states spent a total (excluding federal expenditures) of $44 Billion on corrections, four times more in just one generation.
- Although criminal activity generally decreases dramatically with age between 1992 and 2001 the number of state and federal inmates aged fifty and older doubled in the U.S. Thanks to longer drug sentences, mandatory minimums, three strikes, zero tolerance and more acts being classified as crimes. The lawmakers promised more punishment would finally produce compliance, but it hasn’t. The cost of keeping older prisoners is almost triple that of a younger prisoner, approximately $70,000 per year.
