SORNA/SMART

The Federal 2006 Adam Walsh Act (AWA) is also known as the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

SORNA is the proposed guidelines that the states are supposed to follow to be certified as AWA compliant by the Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) Office. The SMART Office certifies the states that have met the minimum Federal SORNA guidelines (‘the floor’) but the states can add any additional or outrageous restrictions and registration requirements as there is no ‘ceiling’.
